Vegetables like climbing beans may be grown in hanging baskets, according to Wood. Alternatively, you might grow them in a container on your deck with some poles for climbers and containers for tomatoes, lettuce, and herbs.
Prep the soil
It’s best to start a garden plot from scratch in the fall, according to Wood. However, there is still time to begin this year.
Choose a location with lots of sun (no shade). The grass on your lawn grows best where? That tells you how good the soil is.
To make the soil a bit less alkaline and combat compaction, Woods spreads compost on her community garden plot in Stratford. She does not use traditional fertilizers.(Heidi Wood)
