The organization has not said how many horses have died, but said it’s concerning because the animals are vital to the area’s ecosystem.

“The wild horses of Alberta are a natural treasure,” reads the organization’s website. “They play an important role in maintaining the grassland and as such are an integral part of the overall health of the eastern slopes of the Rocky Mountains.”

HAWS has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for “emergency feed and care” for the wild horses. According to the page, the funds will be used to purchase hay and provide fencing and other supplies to help keep the animals safe.
